THE COMMUNITY SERVICE MEME

Walking the neighbors' dogs. Reorganizing the library books. Cleaning up trash in the park. Community service comes in many different forms. Maybe you're here because you volunteered to be, or maybe you're here because the court sentenced you to 500 hours, but either way, you're ready to do some work. There's just one small thing you hadn't counted on.

Partners.

You're going to be doing the community service in pairs. Get ready for some teamwork.

The Magic Library

  1. Haunted: There are ghosts in the stacks, and they are definitely disturbing the other patrons.
  2. Way into this book: No, literally--you are now in this book. Maybe it's the Great American Novel or maybe it's a suspense thriller. Whatever the plot, the only way out is to see it to the end.
  3. The characters are so real...! and in front of you, demanding your attention. That could be the other person in the thread! Or it could be frickin' Sauron.
  4. Dynamic Dewey Decimal: The shelves in here are curiously mobile. Whether you see it happening or not, it's soon obvious that the place has become a maze--and you're in the middle.
  5. Forbidden section: Every good magical library has one. Eldritch runes, lurking curses, a necromancer who's been waiting for someone to read him back to life--it's all in here, waiting to be uncovered.
  6. Magic for Dummies: Ever wanted to learn magic? Great! There's a bunch of easy how-to books right here! They're a little light on safety precautions, though....
  7. Sir you need a library card for that: You work here and you're trying to deal with an unruly patron... and the library is still magic. This is the most harrowing prompt on the list.
  8. Magic library? Really? Somehow, you are having a completely normal-ass time in here. That's remarkable in of itself.
  9. Wildcard!

Ask Me Anything!

  1. In your subject line or toplevel, post something for others to ask your character about.
  2. Examples could be "I am a Starfleet Captain", or "I fought dinosaurs on Isla Nublar", or "I am on a quest of vengeance in 1657 Japan."
  3. Others will come in and ask them anything!
  4. Honesty is optional. :3

the enchanted forest meme

Oh, fairy tales. Do they remind us that no matter what happens, things can still turn out alright and your prince will come, or do they tap into your primal fears and remind you of what and what not to do to avoid an untimely end? Do they reflect the human condition and subconscious, or are they just clever stories to amuse adults and keep kids up at night? Or are they as sweet as they seem? Who knows. It's time to find out.

oo1. comment with your characters
make sure to put names, series, & preferences somewhere!
you can use < ! > sans the spaces to make the comment "blank"
oo2. reply to others in character
oo3. use the rng and enter 1-12
oo4. play out what happens—anything goes!
oo5. profit? oh yeah!
oo6. totally not based off of fairy tales

prompts
There might be triggers, depending on how the prompts are interpreted.

one → small quest it might be a rare herb or a cup of magic water, but someone’s life depends upon you going through these woods and getting it. will you find it right away? have to battle a witch for it? or maybe you don’t want to succeed at all.

two → lost how did you manage to get lost in these woods? you had that map, right? how did you even get to this part of the country? whatever happened, you’re stuck until someone helps you out. if they want you out in the first place.

three → chased these woods weren’t exactly the place you wanted to go, but you had no choice. innocent or guilty of a crime, or a victim of circumstance, these woods might buy you some time… wait. was that a wolf in the distance?

four → the old castle sometimes when you’re lost or wandering about, you see something really amazing or unusual. or something you were never meant to find. like that old abandoned castle people have been whispering about…

five → passing through the forest has a well-worn path that no one ever strays from, lest something magical happens to them. you’ve traveled it often enough, but just because you’re on the path doesn’t mean you’ll be left alone.

six → refuge it might be dark and cold, or entirely welcoming, but it’s the only place those nasty goons or insane villagers won’t follow you. but what exactly is keeping everyone else away from here? or did you want into some danger yourself?

seven → chance encounter it’s a fairy! no, wait, that was just an ogre. an ogre?! from sorcerers to talking deer, you can meet anything in an enchanted forest. so will you meet someone who wants to help you, or will they want to eat you instead?

eight → danger this forest doesn’t like newcomers, and the creatures don’t like humans. its ways are old and strange, and just because you’ve been able to enter it doesn’t mean you’ll be spared. no one likes trespassers, after all.

nine → abandoned for whatever reason, you were abandoned here a long time ago. this is the only place you have ever known, and you’d rather not leave. not even for that prince who has come to take you back home, long lost princess.

ten → large quest the forest might be the end of your quest, or it might be a large part of it. you’ve been fighting hard for a long time to rescue the princess or defeat the wizard, and this forest isn’t going to scare or defeat you. will it?

eleven → spell trapped in an ancient oak tree? put under a sleeping curse? or maybe you’re the one who is causing that mischief from that little cottage you’ve hidden in the old forest people are learning to become wary of these days.

twelve → magical not all enchanted forests are scary! some of them are filled with sunlight, fairies, pretty little birds, and all those big-eyed creatures, all of them singing along with you, having a wonderfully good time.

You're having a nightmare, and you aren't alone. Someone is here with you in tonight's strange, dark dreamscape--for better or for worse.

  1. Chased: Bears, tentacly monsters, giant vengeful wasps. You need to escape from it but you can't find a way.
  2. Trapped: Elevator, sinking ship, cave. You're in and you can't get out.
  3. Performance: It's often quoted that people fear public speaking more than they fear death. You don't know the script, you've never seen this Powerpoint, the teleprompter is blurry as hell... forget falling, you're about to die on stage.
  4. Hated: You know those dreams where everyone you know accuses you of something terrible and they all hate you now? Yeah. It's that one tonight.
  5. Disaster! You're on an island and a volcano erupts! You're next to a river and it floods! Never mind how geologically, climatologically, or physically likely it would be in this location in real life, it's happening now.
  6. Haunting past: Your bad memories are just waiting for you to let your guard down, and what's more unguarded than sleep?
  7. Wildcard: There are infinite nightmares in infinite combinations... why not put together your own?

A classified ad is an ad designed to either sell a certain thing, or to find
someone who is willing to sell a thing that you wish to buy. You can also
sell your own services or post jobs for others.

Post with your character. Instead of putting in their name and canon in
the subject line, you are going to put their ad.

For instance, if they are SELLING something the subject line would
look something like this:

FOR SALE: 1 XBOX, USED BUT IN GOOD CONDITION

If you are looking for something it might look like this:

WANTED: XBOX AS LONG AS IT WORKS.

You can further elaborate in the body of your comment about it if
you want, just remember classified ads are usually short and to the
point. It will also be assumed that your character has their phone
number and email along with their ad for others to contact them.

Look around. See someone advertising something your character
would be interested in, or looking for something your character
might have? Tag them!

  1. Dinosaurs!!1 Wow! This is great. There's cute little maiasaur babies and quetzacoatlus flying around and pleiosaurs in the tanks. Everything is great. You're so glad you came. Enjoy this AU where they actually hired experienced zookeepers and safety specialists.
  2. Safari time: Time to get into the jeep, the walking paths, or the monorail and head out into the meadows and jungle roadways to see all the dinosaurs behind their fences.
  3. OSHA will have a field day: Something feels off. A loudspeaker announcement for everyone to remain calm, zookeepers running flat-out, maybe it's time to figure out where the emergency exit is.
  4. Get off my lawn, that's LUNCH: There is a perception that herbivorous animals are naturally gentle and safe... a perception that is terribly wrong. Herbivores stampede. Herbivores are territorial. And for heaven's sake, stay out of range of the thagomizer.
  5. Clever girl... You're being hunted and you know it. There's velociprators. There's venemous compys. There might even be a t-rex stomping around. The only way to stay out of their stomachs is to outwit them.
  6. Have you tried turning it off and on again? It's a desperate effort to turn the park's defensive hardware back on before you get devoured by its inhabitants. Will you wait for everyone to get back in or are you going to needs-of-the-many this? How good are your skills of a hacker? Hurry up and enter that password.
  7. Aftermath: You survived. Somehow. Maybe you are now best friends with this person you didn't know before this morning, or maybe they look like they know first aid and you could really use it.
  8. Wildcard! Mix and match, have a normal one or a really bad one!

  1. Forest: Trees, big leaves, and lots of places to hide and sneak around--both for humans and dinosaurs.
  2. Meadows: It's a beautiful vista probably full of triceratops, and easy to drive your ATV through, but what it doesn't have is a lot of obvious cover.
  3. Visitors' Center: There's big models in here, explanations of why many dinosaurs are believed to have been featured, a jungle cafe... an overpriced giftshop where you can by any name on a keychain except your own, apparently.
  4. Lab: This is where all the DNA happens, but don't ask if they've submitted any ethical protocols to IACUC. Computers, things in cages, lab techs crying over their gels not running... also, the fridge is NOT for food items.

Hey! Here's a list of dinosaurs featured in Jurassic Park and Prehistoric Planet!

Yes, it's that time of year, time to set yourself to a strict regimen of self-improvement and wild optimism about your own sense of discipline. Whether it's a plan to eat 5 fresh fruits and vegetables a day, to be more emotionally honest, or to stop letting that demon in your head use your body to go on murderous rampages, declare it before one and all.

1. Post your character!
2. In your character's toplevel, write down one or more New Years' resolutions that they will really, really try to follow.
3. Tag around and commentate!

snowfall

Snow... that curiously peaceful, curiously quiet, curiously magical winter weather. And here you are out in it.

scenarios

  1. It's a winter wonderland, just where you want to be.
  2. The best part about snow is getting inside and having some hot cocoa by a warm fire. Or something stronger, perhaps?
  3. There's nothing like snowfall to inspire artwork--men, angels, snow goons... and it's just the right consistency to do what you like.
  4. Or perhaps this means WAR. Incoming!
  5. Actually, wait, no, you didn't mean to be out here in the snow, and this is kind of bad, or maybe it is very bad. This is why Mom always told you to bring thermals!
  6. wildcard! it's snowing do anything.

The Traveling Meme

You're on your way from point A to point B, and you've chosen one of the many forms of communal conveyance to do so! Let's see what your trip looks like today.

  1. Train: The Orient Express if you're feeling fancy, your standard intercity line if you're not, but no matter how humble the train there's always a little bit of romance to the rail.
  2. Plane: It may be the type of travel we least look forward to. Go ahead and stuff your character in coach--unless they're one of the blessed few who can afford knee room in business class.
  3. Ship: The heyday of the grand passenger liners, a tall ship (preferably with a star to steer her by), or the ferry.
  4. Bus: Whether it's a school bus, a Greyhound, or your regular commuter ride... we know you're not wearing the seatbelt like you're supposed to.
  5. Stagecoach: Some old-timey fun!
  6. Airship: Listen, JRPGs had it right when they decided these should be a normal thing.
  7. Spaceship: For that sci-fi feel! To boldly get Ubered where no one has Ubered before.

Scenarios

  1. I brought a book for a REASON: You're just trying to make this journey in peace and quiet but for the person in the seat next to you....
  2. Stalled: Well, now you're really not there yet, because your mode of transport has stopped working--thrown a wheel or can't get off the tarmac or lost the breeze. Better figure out something to do in the meantime.
  3. Stand and deliver! Dammit, it's bandits, or robbers, or some other kind of ne'er do well--or maybe you're the one pulling the heist.
  4. Running: Not literally, obviously, but you're trying to get away from something bad. Let's hope it's not catching up to you a few seats down....
  5. Disaster! This isn't just inconvenient, it's catastrophic! Good thing you're here to save the day, right? ...Right?
  6. Actually having a nice time: It's just pleasant to sit and look out windows while someone else does the steering, you know?

Read over the following prompts. Once you have read over these prompts, choose characters to place on the meme and tag other characters in the meme.

Once two characters are together, they must attempt to complete one of these tasks, regardless of how ill-suited they may or may not be to this exercise.

Your time starts now.

Yes, that's right, it's the hit comedy show Taskmaster, and your character is on it! In a twist, all the tasks are done with a partner. Together in a little white room covered in plastic, or in the front yard with its inexplicable cow statue, or an artificially cozy office, your characters find a plain white paper sealed with red wax... open it... and receive their task.

The task location is littered with all sorts of typical household items to use as tools: kitchen gear, stuff in the garden shed, toolboxes from the garage, etc. The only limit is your imagination. Maybe one or two laws of physics, as well.

All the information is in the task. )

  2. Breaking & entering
  3. Grand theft auto
  4. Kidnapping!
  5. Murder
  6. Any, all, or none of these

Relationship of the person tagging you:

  1. Cohort! Boy that was fun.

It's the excuse you've been looking for to play soft, fluffy things.

  1. Sharing is caring: You notice that the other person is in need of something--a beverage, or a space on the couch, or what-have-you--and you're willing to share.
  2. Oh no oh no I'm sorry: You accidentally hurt them in a minor way, oh no!
  3. Pets are cute: You're both cooing over something fuzzy. Kitty? Doggo? Tribble...?
  4. Can't sleep: It's way too late but you just can't sleep. Fortunately you're not the only one up.
  5. Stop and smell the roses: It's just a wonderful day to stroll around and appreciate life.
  6. It's not that scary: One of you has to face down a fear--heights, wasps, planes. The other person is there to help.
  7. Waiting for bail: The old saying, a good friend will bail you out--a great friend will be in jail with you, saying "that was fun!" Maybe a friend you didn't even know you had before today.
  8. Cooking: Nothing brings people together like sous-cheffing for each other.
  9. Viewer's choice! Idk man there's a lot of soft scenarios in the world, make up your own!

You were on your way, sailing along the seas or the stars or the skies in some sort of vessel but something's gone terribly wrong and your ship is going down. It's unsavable, you have to abandon it. You've been shipwrecked.

Post your character, tone and setting preferences (is it a traditional boat and deserted island? A spaceship crashing on a strange planet? An airship caught on mountains? Feel free to be flexible!) and pick some prompts you like!

1. Getting Wrecked: you're still on the ship and it's the moment it starts to go down. Whether it's by storm, battle, tragic accident, even the kraken - now's the crisis that causes the shipwreck. Maybe grab the nearest person and find a way off this thing!
2. Adrift: Just after the ship's been sunk, you're in a lifeboat or escape pod or maybe you're in the water and there's a floating piece of wood only big enough for one person. Whatever the case, you're probably in shock or trying to figure out what your options are. And maybe hope there are some helpful mermaids and there aren’t any sharks
3. Washed Up: you've reached or woken up on shore. Where are you? Where'd you end up? Better explore and figure out where you are with whoever got stranded with you. It's time to get your bearings. Is the place abandoned or do you find something there, like the ruins of other ships or an abandoned pirate hideout? There could also be something strange about it…
4. Survival: you've been stranded. You need food, water supplies. If your ship is around you might need to fix it, or maybe it's gone and you need to build a raft or some sort of signal for help. Or you could go full Castaway, Gilligan's Island, Swiss Family Robinson, maybe even LOST if that's your jam. And if you're doing more of a genre thing, are there monsters? Aliens? Strange plants and animals you're not sure if edible? Whatever the case, you want to get off this rock or get rescued, but you're going to have to survive until then.
5. Saved: you repaired your ship or built a replacement or someone's found you. How long has it been? How dirty are you? And how glad are you that it's all about to be over?

The museum is closed. The doors are locked. Everything is quiet... up until the moment where all the exhibits stir to life.

  1. Roman City: It's Ancient Rome itself! But at 1/60th size. Take a stroll down the Appian Way, tour the seven hills, enjoy the heated floors, make friends with the tiny plastic populace... but be very careful if you wander down to the Coliseum.

  2. The Universe: The planets, the stars, that majestic dance of the cosmos. Place your hand on the visualization of the timeline... oh, looks like you've found yourself at the beginning of the Age of Stars! As in you are there, in space. Breathing is fine, and the view is spectacular... but the early years of galactic formation were pretty chaotic, so watch out for space debris.

  3. World of Animals: Most natural history museums have at least one collection of taxidermied animals, and this one is no exception. Say hello to the dodo!

  4. Hall of armor: You know how when you're walking past suits of armor, you start wondering if they might come to life? Guess what, they have. Maybe you could chat about the fate of the Angevin Empire. Or you could mortally offend them with a night/knight pun. And why are their swords so sharp?

  5. Fossils: The ancient creatures of bygone eons, captured in stone and amber, are getting a second lease on life. Right now. It could be fine, maybe it's just the fossil ferns stretching their fronds, or maybe it's something that realized it hasn't had lunch for sixty-five million years.

  6. The gift shop: Normally, the biggest risk here is to your wallet. But now there are hordes of tiny plastic dinosaurs, plush marine mammals, and overpriced figurines storming all over the place.

  7. ...Other?

Natural history museums are full of variety and are always changing up their exhibits! Feel free to come up with your own!

The Epitaph meme

It's the old fantasy... what if you could attend your own funeral and hear the eulogy given about you and your life? Happily, today you are getting the next-best thing... the opportunity to read your own epitaph before you are, in fact, buried under it.

But whoever carved this one--well, maybe they're a little irreverent. A little bit disrespectful. Maybe, to put it bluntly... they've been a little too honest.

1. Post your character.
2. In your toplevel, write an epitaph for them. Maybe it's the thing they really do want to be remembered for, maybe it's something they can't live down even when no longer living. Or maybe it's full-on Oregon Trail nonsense.
3. Have your character read other people's!

  3. Hide it! Nefarious people are after the egg and you need to keep it from them.

TINY MEME
Time to try a new perspective! This is a meme inspired by things from our childhood like The Borrowers, Thumbelina, fairy stories, The Littles, and more! Your character is very very small and the world is very very big.

1. Maybe you drank whatever was in that suspiciously-labeled bottle or found yourself wrapped-up in some other magical shenanigan. Whatever happened, now you are tiny!
2. Rodents of...perfectly average size. A common creature who is barely noticed by normal humans is suddenly attacking!
3. You've been captured! Whether by a deadly spider or a curious Big Person, it's time to use your wits to get out of this situation or rescue your friend!
4. Foraging! You're low on supplies. Time to go out into the big, big world.
5. "You're...like me!" You thought you were the last, but suddenly you've found someone else your size!
6. Find shelter! There's a storm, your original home has been destroyed, or maybe it's just time for a change of scenery.
7. Stealth mission! Whatever you do, don't get caught!
8. The first meeting. You've had your suspicions. You thought you were crazy, but now you've found them! There's been a tiny person living in your home all this time!
9. Part of your world. You've invited someone to meet you eye-to eye. Creep through the mouse hole or walk among giants!
10. Just because you're small doesn't mean you can't help out in a big way. A normal-sized person is in trouble. Use your unique perspective to get them out of it!
